British World Land Speed Record Attempt.

Bloodhound SSC is a car designed to break 1,000mph and set a new world land speed record. Bloodhound will be driven by Wing Commander Andy Green who is the current world land speed record holder when he drove Thrust SSC to a speed of 763 mph in 1997.

Bloodhound is powered by a Eurojet EJ200 jet engine, developed for the Eurofighter Typhoon, and a hybrid rocket which alone will produce around 47,000lbs of thrust.

In 2018 Spectrum Drone Services met key members of the team behind Bloodhound to discuss options for support and direct services.

The project came under new ownership in 2019 and is now branded Bloodhound LSR (for Land Speed Record).

Spectrum Drone Services specialises in providing customised drone solutions in complex environments.

New UK drone regulations come into force 13th March 2019

Spectrum Drone Services Operations Manual Review Service

On 20 February 2019, the United Kingdom Government published an amendment to the UK Air Navigation Order 2016 (ANO) which contains its changes to the legislation regarding the operation of small unmanned aircraft that come into force from 13th March 2019.

Effective from 13th March 2019 (the 2019 amendment)

  • A revised limitation on the closest distance that small unmanned aircraft of any mass may be flown from specific types of aerodrome.

  • Changes to the dimensions of the ‘flight restriction zones’ associated with the new distance limitation from these ‘protected aerodromes’ and the introduction of new definitions in Schedule 1 in order to accommodate these changes.

Drone Battery Care in Cold Weather

spectrum-drone-services-winter-battery-in-cold3.jpg

Now we are entering winter in many parts of the world the colder temperatures affects your drone’s batteries.

Colder temperatures shorten the flight time of your drone by slowing the chemical reaction with LiPo batteries having an effect of lowering the batteries capacity. A fully charged drone battery that will normally provide around 20 - 25 minutes of flight time under normal conditions, could provide just 10 - 15 minutes of flight time in colder conditions. Cold weather conditions can also cause an unexpected power loss casing batteries to fail completely.

It should also be noted wind chill can play a significant role in a batteries ability to operate efficiently and safely.

Some battery tips;

  • Keep your batteries warm.

  • Hover after take-off.

  • Ensure no warnings on your application after take-off.

  • Operate the throttle and all axis gently.

  • Never operate your drone outside of its designed limits.

  • Take a portable charger for mobile devices.

DJI Inspire 1 Series

The batteries on the Inspire 1 are exposed to the elements, ensure you:

Apply the DJI TB47 / TB48 battery thermal insulation stickers when the temperature is lower than +5 degrees Celsius.

Use the DJI Inspire 1 battery heater before flight, the drone may not even start if the battery is cold.

DJI Mavic 2 Argos release details

spectrum+drone+services+mavic+2.jpg

Argos, a UK high street retailer have apparently included details of two new drones from DJI in their new catalogue... the Mavic 2 Zoom and Mavic 2 Pro.

This is the first information available on the new drones from DJI which comes after the world leading consumer drone manufacturer postponed the official release on 18th July.

DJI Mavic 2 Specs

We believe the Mavic 2 will be equipped with 1080p video transmission for high-definition live video. The new Mavic models are designed to reach a max distance of 4.97 miles, and they will have a max speed of about 44.7 mph. The Mavic 2 models have a flight time rated at 31 minutes. The snapshot of the Argos catalogue also stated the new Mavic 2 drones will have “omnidirectional obstacle sensing,” which suggests that the new DJI quadcopters will have obstacle avoidance from all directions!
