The GVC (General Visual Line of Sight Certificate) is the new CAA commercial standard in drone training allowing you to operate drones up to 25Kg commercially in the Specific Category of legislation.

GVC - Instructor Led Course

With our instructor led CAA GVC courses you will be learning direct from an experienced drone instructor and operator with over 8 years piratical experience.

Many of our clients prefer to be taught in a classroom environment, or via webchat, as it provides the best interactive learning environment. Online eLearning is not for everyone, so if you are one of those people who prefer to be taught and have the direct instructor interaction, our instructor led GVC course is the one for you.

South West Regional Drone Training Centre

We can provide COVID safe CAA GVC courses from our South West Regional Drone Training Centre located 2 miles from Bristol Airport.

In a COVID safe classroom environment with ample distancing, you can be taught everything you need to meet the requirements for the CAA GVC qualification.

The Course

Instructor led courses at our South West Regional Drone Training Centre lasts for two days. In this period you will be taught everything you need to become a qualified CAA drone pilot and operator. No pre drone or aviation knowledge is required, we teach you everything, from the ground up!

The theory phase can be reduced with the combination of some pre-learning allowing you to complete everything in one day if you so wish, please ask for details.

Course Support

Your instructor is one of the countries most experienced drone instructors and operators, with thousands of hours flight experience and over 1,500 students trained over 8 years, you can rest assured you will get the best course support with all your questions answered.

For residential students your instructor will be available in the evenings to go over anything you need.

Course Supporting Documentation

To complement our CAA approved GVC drone training course we have created a 170 page Student Manual which contains all the course content.

Each module is laid out in a logical and easy to read format.

You can use your Student Manual to follow along in the lessons, use it as a revision aid prior to your exam or for reference in the future once you gain your CAA Operational Authorisation.

The Student Manual will be available once you have enrolled on one of our CAA approved GVC drone courses, and is supplied electronically in pdf format to help save the environment.

Theory Examination

On completion of the theory modules you will be ready to sit your theory exam. The exam consists of 40 multiple choice questions covering the content of the modules.

Some people find the thought of taking an exam daunting, don’t worry there will be revision periods where the instructor will recap all the important items.

For our residential students we hold a pub quiz which always goes down well.

Operations Manual Workshop

We provide you with our excellent Operations Manual template and have a dedicated Operations Manual Workshop which is a quick and easy process for you to complete your Operations Manual.

We are professional auditors of CAA documents so you can be assured you get the best information and support.

Practical Flight Assessment

The Practical Flight Assessment is primarily safety focused and tests a candidate’s flying skill and safe operational ability. This is set against the processes stated in your Operations Manual. We will provide you with close support and guidance documents leading up to the assessment so nothing will come as a surprise to you. Your Assessor will be looking for safe and competent flying – were not looking for Red Arrow drone pilots! Your instructor will quickly put you at your ease to ensure that you perform to your maximum capability.

To ease you into the assessment, we can provide pre-assessment flight training for those with some flying experience or train you to professional standard from scratch for those new to drones.

We have flight locations all over the UK as well as several locations at our South West Regional Drone Training Centre south of Bristol.

The Flight Assessment process takes approximately 1hr, additional flight training can be provided by arrangement at the time of your assessment.

Not everyone can complete the theoretical and practical phases in one go due to work commitments. If you are unable to complete your flight assessment immediately after the completion of the theoretical phase, we give you a period of 4 months in which to complete your practical flight assessment.

Fixed wing practical flight assessments can only be carried out from one of our South West based assessment locations due to the nature of fixed wing operations.

CAA Operational Authorisation Application

Once you have completed the process, you can then apply to the CAA for an Operational Authorisation. We will provide you with support for your application to the CAA.

GVC & A2 CofC Combo

For commercial flexibility we offer a combined GVC and A2 CofC course enabling you to operate with less restrictions in some environments.

Weekend GVC Courses

We provide GVC courses over a weekend on request for those unable to attend a weekday course. Weekend courses can be spread over multiple weekends to suit you.

1 to 1 Personal Training

If you wish a more personal level of training, we provide personal 1 to 1 classroom based Instructor Led training course options.

Video Conference Training

If you would prefer your theory training via video conference this is an option we can provide and works well for the theoretical phase of the course, please ask for details.

No Drone - No Problem

If you do not have a drone yet, or are travelling by air and do not want to bring your drone with you, that’s not a problem. We have a range of multirotor and fixed wing drones for flight training and your practical flight assessment, please ask for details.

What is an A2 Certificate of Competency?

The CAA A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) is a drone qualification that permits you to fly small drones, or Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) “close to people” and within congested areas where you wouldn’t otherwise be able to fly.

The A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) is now the first building block of a drone pilot training for anyone wishing to start a drone business or for organisations with a requirement to operate drones commercially as part of their ongoing strategy.

You will still be able fly older 'Legacy drones’ that weigh less than 2kg such as the DJI Mavic series, DJI Phantom series and Parrot Anafi can be flown under your A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC).

Fly in congested areas up to 50m horizontally from uninvolved persons, the A2 Certificate of Competency (A2 CofC) is a very advantageous qualification.

Right now under the CAA’s Transitional Arrangements, with a drone that is less than 2kg, drone pilots are able fly effectively to the same separation distances as a current CAA Operational Authorisation holder with a GVC, this is huge.

Your A2 CofC lasts for 5 years.

Instructor Led Course (A2CofC)

Just like to say a Massive Thank You to Rich and Spectrum Drone Services. I struggle with learning stuff and find it difficult most of the time and I wanted to do my A2CofC, so contacted Rich to see if he could help me accomplish getting my A2COFC.

Rich booked me in and I went this Saturday to do it (edit 3rd June 2023).
