The world's first theatrical drone performance
Spectrum Drone Services chief pilot was one of the top five elite drone pilots hand-picked to perform at the 2015 World Economic Forum’s Summit on Global Agenda Gala Dinner held in Mushrif Central Park, Abu Dhabi.
We carried out a program of test flying the modified DJI Matrice 100 drones followed by practising the specially choreographed sequences required for the show in the UK. On arrival in Abu Dhabi three days of intensive flying took place at Mushrif Central Park, rehearsing with the dancers who performed interactive choreographed dance with the drones.
The theatrical performance took place at night in front of the Abu Dhabi royal family and the world's top economic dignitaries and their guests. The performance featured interaction between dancers and actors with the whole performance being set to music requiring split second timing... the world’s first.
Project Africa
In 2018 Spectrum Drone Services provided specialist drone services in central Africa. Our precise location and task are confidential but we are pleased to have provided a valuable service.
We arrived at our location by light aircraft landing on a dirt runway in the middle of the African jungle. The location was beautiful but operating drones in this extreme environment presented its own unique challenges.
While operating in country special permissions were granted to operate Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS). Reconnaissance flights were carried out to a distance of over 10 miles from our base camp and to altitudes higher than 3,000 feet.
Beyond Visual Line Of Sight (BVLOS) operations; means flying an unmanned aircraft without the Remote Pilot having to keep the unmanned aircraft in visual line of sight at all times. Instead, the Remote Pilot flies the aircraft by instruments from a Remote Pilot Station (RPS).
BVLOS operations require higher pilot/operator qualifications & experience to operate safely. BVLOS operations will only be approved by in specific circumstances where safe separation standards can be ensured (ie remote or segregated airspace), or where traditional 'See &Avoid' methodologies or new 'Detect & Avoid' technologies are deployed.
Complex Drone Service Solutions
In 2015 we were tasked to fly inside a hanger on a live airfield amongst multiple full size aircraft to allow the training of a specialist drone cameraman.
The imagery was captured using a DJI Inspire 1 drone flown in a non GPS stabilised flight mode for safety and smoothness of video. The trainee cameraman operated the drone's camera via a second dedicated controller.
This was a challenging environment in which to fly especially as we were required to fly within centimetres of the aircraft, a true test of pilot skill.
Containing an airliner, four helicopters and two executive jets this was truly a complex environment.
